The design strategy for Nudus was to create a brand mark and packaging livery that would highlight the product's unique selling proposition - its natural, unadulterated quality. The packaging imagery depicts the fruit and vegetables in their raw, naked form, as they were picked in sunny Australia. The stacked slices, transitioning from fresh to dried, articulate the slow-dried method and the powerful crunch of the product.
Spindler's design is not just visually appealing but also technologically advanced. The packaging is printed on rewind, using CMYK plus two spot colours per pack. The brand mark and image are finished with a spot UV gloss, while the rest of the material has a matt finish. This contrast in finishes adds to the visual appeal of the packaging.
The packaging design was realized with the help of a dedicated team. Andy Lewis was the photographer, Anna Lee was the copywriter, and Anneke Decker was the retoucher and finished artist. The team worked together to create a design that would appeal to consumers looking for a clean, simple snack.
The design process, from concept to finished art, spanned from May 2018 to December 2018, with the product launching in March 2019. The research phase involved studying the art of still life and the essence of fruits and vegetables as objects of beauty. The challenge was to present the product in a classical way, moving away from the hand-drawn look and cute illustrations common in the market.
Despite the challenges in the production process, the team managed to create a design that truly reflects the brand's philosophy and playful humor. The black background, an unconventional choice for the healthy snack market, was chosen to highlight the product's vibrancy and give it extra shelf appeal. The photography captures the product before and after air-drying, illustrating that the fruit is as good as nature intended.
Spindler's design for Nudus was recognized with a Golden A' Packaging Design Award in 2020. This prestigious award is granted to outstanding and trendsetting creations that advance art, design, and technology, embodying extraordinary excellence and significantly impacting the world with their desirable characteristics. This recognition is a testament to Spindler's innovative approach to design and her ability to create designs that not only look good but also tell a compelling story.
